Join us for the second in The Sleep In Series. Sleep in late, don’t drive all day!
We’ll be heading North East to some great Miata Roads, via Carthage, Gainesboro and Granville.
We’ll gather at the Cracker Barrel near Percy Priest Dam, I-40 East, Stewarts Ferry Road Exit 219 beginning at 9:30am. We’ll depart at 10:00am after a short drivers’ meeting, and jump on I-40 East to get to the good stuff without delay, exiting at HWY 53 toward Carthage.
After a cruise through Carthage, we’ll head North to the “good stuff” — scenic Rts 25, 80 and 85 to Gaineboro with a stop at the scenic overlook of Cordell Hull Reservoir & Dam. All historic lessons included at no extra charge!
After defeating Defeated Creek Highway and the Devil’s Elbow, we’ll wave at Hoggtown Branch. Then, we’ll shadow the upper Cumberland River into Gainesboro, population 962, settled in the 1790’s and named after Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a career US Army Officer.
There, our luncheon destination awaits — The Bull & Thistle — Fine Celtic Fare on the Square! They have a great menu with something for everyone, including something to quench your perishing thirst.
But wait — there’s more!
After lunch, we’ll head back West and homeward, but the scenic roads are hardly over! We’ll take the equally scenic Granville Hwy along the South side of the Cumberland River through Poor House Hollow, Buffalo Hollow, Pinhook Hollow and into Historic Granville. Depending on time and consensus, we’ll make a short stop at Sutton’s General Store, or save it for the next Sleep In Series tour.
From there, it’s Rt 53 Southwest to I-40 West and home.
Hope you can join us. Let Phil & Lois know you’re coming by noon, Friday, Sept 18 at pjmatisak@comcast.net so we can warn the Bull & Thistle.
Until then, be well — drive safely.
